Cast iron:

Good wear resistance: For example, during grate operation, long-term contact and friction with fuel and other materials, the surface of cast iron can resist wear to a certain extent and maintain a good service condition. Common gray cast iron grates, when used in equipment such as small chain grates, can work for a long time under normal operating conditions without serious wear failure.

Excellent vibration damping: It can absorb and buffer the vibration and impact generated during operation. This is important for components such as grates that need smooth operation and must avoid problems like loose connections caused by vibration. For example, when the grate motor starts, stops, or the load fluctuates, cast iron grates can rely on their good vibration damping to maintain overall structural stability.

Good machinability: It can be conveniently machined, processing the cast blank into a finished grate meeting precise dimensional requirements and surface quality, which facilitates subsequent installation and commissioning.

Relatively low strength: However, its compressive strength is acceptable, and it can meet the needs of some operating conditions in bearing certain fuel weight and furnace pressure. But its tensile strength and toughness are inferior to cast steel, so it has certain limitations in some large grate applications that bear greater tension and impact.

Certain limitations in heat resistance: Used at high temperatures for a long time, cast iron may experience growth, deformation and other problems. For example, in some large industrial boiler grate applications under high temperature and high pressure, if the temperature continuously exceeds its suitable range (for ordinary gray cast iron above about 800°C), performance will decline significantly.

Composition: Mainly composed of iron, carbon, and some impurity elements such as silicon, manganese, sulfur and phosphorus. The carbon content is relatively high, generally around 2%-4%, which gives cast iron good casting performance, making it relatively easy to cast into grate components of various complex shapes.
