Why Reciprocating Grates Are Recommended for Municipal Solid Waste Incinerators
With their adaptability, efficiency, environmental performance and ease of maintenance, reciprocating grates have become the preferred equipment for municipal solid waste incineration, especially well-suited to the characteristics of low heating value, high moisture content and complex composition of Chinese MSW. The specific advantages are as follows:
- Strong Fuel Adaptability to Handle Complex Waste Composition
MSW has a varied composition (including kitchen waste, plastics, paper, etc.), high moisture content and large fluctuations in heating value. Through the alternating reciprocating motion of movable and fixed grate bars, the reciprocating grate actively turns over and loosens the fuel layer, breaking up agglomerated waste and preventing local poor ventilation. At the same time, the movement frequency can be adjusted to control the waste residence time in the furnace. Combined with the high-temperature primary air design, even low-heating-value, high-moisture waste can be fully dried and ignited, enabling stable combustion without strict pretreatment.
- High Combustion Efficiency for Both Volume Reduction and Resource Recovery
The grate is divided lengthwise into a drying and ignition zone, a main combustion zone and a burnout zone, with precise air distribution matching each stage of the combustion process. Strong motion in the main combustion zone enhances fuel-air mixing, while slower motion in the burnout zone ensures complete combustion. The carbon content of the ash can be reduced to below 3%, and combustion efficiency is 15%–20% higher than that of traditional fixed grates. Efficient combustion maximizes heat recovery for power generation, achieves a waste volume reduction rate of over 80%, and keeps the loss on ignition of the residue below 5%, achieving the dual goals of volume reduction and resource recovery.
- Excellent Environmental Performance with Reduced Pollutant Emissions
In accordance with the “3T+E” combustion principle, the system is equipped with zoned independent air supply and a secondary air layered supply system, enabling precise control of furnace temperature and oxygen concentration. This ensures the furnace temperature reaches ≥850°C with a flue gas residence time of ≥2 seconds, suppressing dioxin formation at the source while effectively reducing NOx and CO emissions. The modular design and precise combustion control also reduce the amount of environmental protection consumables needed, lowering the subsequent pressure of flue gas treatment and meeting strict environmental standards.
- Reliable Operation with Lower Maintenance Costs
The grate is driven hydraulically, with the drive mechanism located outside the grate — exposed to lower ambient temperatures and less wear, greatly improving reliability. The grate bars do not require bolted connections, and the modular design allows replacement directly from above the grate, making installation and maintenance convenient. The replacement cycle is extended to over 3 years, reducing unplanned downtime. At the same time, the automated control system enables fully automatic operation, regulating the feed rate, grate speed and air volume, reducing labor costs and operating energy consumption.
